Spect — Etymology

Vocabulary development is a life-long process. If you are alert, you will come across new words or new shades of meaning every day. One of the best ways to improve your word power is to study the origin of words, i.e., etymology, because many words are based on the same root. Studying ONE word in detail will help you learn hundreds of words with the similar origin. You will make serendipitous discoveries, which will be your perennial source of happiness. Here’s an etymological TIP to give you an idea about what I mean. .

However, there are a few simple tips that can help you find your way through a maze of structural complexities. Here’s a sample tip to give you an idea about what I mean.

“In time clauses and conditional clauses referring to future time, use the simple present tense (and no will/shall).”

Study the examples given below.

Reduplication

Reduplication, the exact or partial repetition of a word, is a common linguistic feature in most languages including English. Examples include tip-top, okey-dokey, and mishmash. English is replete with such expressions containing repetition of sounds. However, repetition of a word is rare. On the contrary, in many Indian languages like Hindi, repetition of a word is a common feature. Therefore, Indian learners and users of English often translate such expressions and use a word twice, which, sometimes sounds awkward to efficient users of English. Here’s an example in the form of a tip. .

Last but not least

Articles in English can be baffling at times. There are hundreds of rules and thousands of exceptions to those rules. Plus there are some fixed expressions with illogical and sometimes seemingly ungrammatical usage. English language learners, even at advanced levels, find it difficult to decide whether to use an article or not; and if yes, then which. The best way to master this aspect of English is to observe and analyse how expert writers and speakers use articles. Example sentences given in authentic dictionaries can also be a great source of knowledge and information. Here’s an expression which forms a part of common errors in English. .

Life is complex

Life is complex, isn’t it.

Life is complex, whether you like it or not. It makes you dance and laugh, but, at the same time, it makes you run and cry. Accept life in totality. Make the most of every happy moment and forget the one that caused trouble.

Hi everyone,

Sometimes a wrong word can spoil your image. You speak something and people laugh; and you don’t know why they are laughing. This is likely to happen if you aren’t familiar with the correct meaning or usage of the word. Here’s one such word that can trip you up: “backside”.

Happy Learning, Happy Sharing!

Best wishes,
